About the city
Seoul moves quickly and organises itself well. Gyeongbokgung Palace and the tiled roofs of Bukchon Hanok Village hold the old city; Gangnam and Hongdae hold the new one, and the subway connects them all cleanly and cheaply. Korean food is worth the trip on its own — grilled meat, stews, and a street-food culture that runs late into the night.
The mountains rise directly out of the city, so a serious hike is a short ride from the centre, and the DMZ, one of the most unusual day trips in the world, is an hour to the north. Spring blossom and autumn colour are the two best seasons.
